In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, a drunk driver received 5.5 years in prison for an accident in which a pregnant woman died. This was reported to the regional prosecutor's office.

At the end of 2024, on the eve of the New Year, a head-on collision between a Volkswagen Passat and a Toyota Carina occurred on the Kansk-Aban-Boguchany highway. A couple from Krasnoyarsk was traveling in the Toyota: the woman was 8 months pregnant. Their path lay to the village of Tagara, to their parents. They were moving in the dark along a familiar road, the car was in good working order, and the speed was acceptable.

A 47-year-old resident of the Kezhemsky district came out to meet them. He got behind the wheel while drunk. There were beer bottles in the interior of his car. Later, an examination recorded 1.04 mg/l of ethyl alcohol in his exhaled air.

At the 313th kilometer of the highway, in a section with snow, where the road turns into a turn, the Volkswagen driver lost control. Ignoring right-hand traffic and the speed limit, he drove into the oncoming lane. The collision happened almost immediately.

“As a result of the impact, the woman from the oncoming car died on the spot. She was not fastened: the belt pinched her stomach, and the future parents decided that it would be safer and more comfortable. Her husband received severe injuries – multiple fractures and traumatic shock. He was evacuated by air ambulance to a regional hospital, where he spent more than a month. Now the man uses a wheelchair and is applying for disability,” the press service of the supervisory agency said.

The defendant insisted that he allegedly drank after the accident: in a state of shock, he found two bottles of beer in the car and “drank to numb the pain.” However, the device and medical examination showed otherwise: alcohol in the blood and exhaled air was recorded several hours after the accident, and its concentration was too high.

The court found the man guilty of violating traffic rules while intoxicated, resulting in serious harm to the health of one person and the death of another (clause “a”, part 4 of article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). He was not only sentenced to 5.5 years in prison in a general regime colony, but was also banned from driving for 2.5 years.

The court also exacted compensation for moral damage from the convicted person: 700 thousand rubles in favor of the parents of the deceased woman, and another 1.2 million in favor of her husband.
