A PNL leader accuses PSD of agreeing with AUR to vote together on the amendments to the budget draft

The leader of the PNL Iasi organization, Alexandru Muraru, said on Saturday, on Antena 3, PSD and AUR that they agreed to vote together, in committees and in plenary, amendments to the budget project, and this game is irresponsible, because it throws Romania into a major crisis.

“We know from the discussions we have with colleagues from the PSD and with colleagues from all parties, that they made the strategy including for the budget-finance committee. You will see on Monday and Tuesday that the AUR and the PSD will vote together on these amendments and later, in plenary”, said PNL Iasi leader Alexandru Muraru, quoted by News.ro.

“a big mess”

He accused the PSD of “going into this conspiracy with this totally absurd and catastrophic idea for Romania that this budget belongs to the PSD, not Romania, which is a big mess”, Muraru adding that this game risks throwing Romania into a major crisis.

The deputy specified that the PNL parliamentarians will be able to submit amendments “within a budget envelope” agreed within the coalition, of approximately 750,000 lei per parliamentarian, an amount that must go exclusively to investments.

“The problem is that, at the moment these amendments jump off the tire that each party negotiated in the coalition, at that moment, these figures will blow up the budget. There is an imminent risk that Romania will be downgraded in a few weeks by the rating agencies and its access to European funds will be stopped”, added the PNL deputy.

What the draft budget provides

The draft budget for 2026 was adopted by the Government on Thursday, after which it was sent to the Parliament for approval.

Data from the project show significant increases in funding for some ministries and institutions in areas such as energy, defence, European funds or digitalisation, as well as for the High Court and the General Prosecutor's Office. There will also be important increases for the Presidential Administration and the SRI. Instead, Health is among the areas for which the budget will be reduced compared to last year.

The budget deficit for 2026 is estimated at 6.2% of GDP, being projected to decrease to 5.1% of GDP in 2027, total revenues increase to 36% of GDP compared to last year, and expenses increase by approximately 55.5 billion lei, according to the project.

Also, the budget for investments increases by almost 25.6 billion lei compared to last year, which raises their share to over 8% of GDP, compared to 7.2% in the previous year.
