Brâncusi – The selfie-loving artist who really controlled his image and work

Black-and-white photographs taken by Constantin Brâncuși from 1906 to the end of the 1930s, including some self-portraits, are on display at MARe/Museum of Recent Art until September 27, together with works by artists Carl Andre, Marion Baruch and Evariste Richer.

For Brâncuși, photography was not only a method to archive his work, but also to see it again with different eyes. His photographic approach was defined by an obsessive attention to light, which he saw as an integral part of his sculptures, along with the space in which they were located.
The selection reveals a certain intention: Brâncuși did not photograph only the sculptures, but also the empty spaces and the atmosphere around them.

The collection of images covers from the bust of a child from 1906 to the ensemble from Târgu Jiu, entered the UNESCO heritage in 2024.
