Krasnoyarsk artist Viktor Sachivko, who stood at the origins of modern art in Siberia, has died

In Krasnoyarsk, artist, curator and museum figure Viktor Sachivko died after a long illness. He was 66 years old. The death was reported at the Peace Square Museum Center, where Sachivko worked for many years.

Victor Sachivko was born in 1959 in Abakan. He graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Architectural Academy and began as an architect, but in the late 1980s he focused on visual art – he worked on book graphics and taught drawing. Since 2000, he has headed the department of current artistic practices at KIC.

He stood at the origins of modern art in Krasnoyarsk. In the 1990s, when the city was actively involved in the all-Russian artistic process, Sachivko experimented with new forms: painting, graphics, installations, video art, design.

His works have participated in the Krasnoyarsk Museum Biennale since 1995. In 2007, he received the Grand Prix of the Biennale for the project “Return of the Dream.” In 2004, he was among the ten finalists of the European painting competition Lexmark European Art Prize; his painting “Wooden Water” was shown in Milan. His works are kept in private and public collections in Russia, the Netherlands, France, Germany, the USA and Australia.

The Peace Square museum called Sachivko a “real, dedicated artist” and promised to show his work “The Air Above Us is Cheerful” at the next exhibition from the collection “There Will Be Signs.” Work is also underway on a catalogue. The commemorative exhibition will open on March 27.
