The well-known journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu published on Thursday, March 5, perhaps his harshest message to President Nicusor Dan, accusing him of stupidity and cowardice for the lack of a clear position in relation to the direction of Romania, against the background of the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
The statements come after the head of state avoided a sharp answer regarding the nuclear cooperation offer received from France and announced that he will not convene the Supreme Council of Defense of the Country until the moment the danger for Romania becomes “imminent”.
“President Dan can stop here. I can't anymore.”
After Mr. Nicușor Dan ended the sentence regarding the acceptance or not of the nuclear cooperation offer from France with: «And I stop here…», plus a mental shudder, I can no longer stop:
Beyond his math major, beyond the fact that I voted for him and will always vote for him when he competes with G. Simion, I say his performance as president qualifies him as stupid and cowardly. Stupid because he's scared and scared because he's stupid. Or, not even stupid – mediocre. This is the explanation of his delays in ignorance.” wrote Cristian Tudor Popescu on Facebook.
On Thursday evening, when asked about France's proposal, the president recalled that Romania already benefits from NATO's nuclear protection. “Ever since Romania joined NATO, it has been protected by the NATO nuclear umbrella, provided by the United States“, said the head of state.
At the same time, the leader from Bucharest specified that this protection does not require the placement of nuclear weapons on the territory of the country. “Being protected by the NATO nuclear umbrella does not presuppose the presence of elements of a nuclear nature on Romania's territory, to be very clear. In the medium future, there is no question of nuclear components being hosted on our territory“.
Regarding the talks with France, the president mentioned that the relationship of military cooperation is an old one. “I can't tell you more than that it's a long-standing relationship. We have French soldiers in Romania, we are grateful for that. It is a relationship that develops in this complicated security context“.
