Iranian state television and the state news agency IRNA reported the supreme leader's death, but did not provide the exact cause of death. According to Western agencies, 40 days of national mourning have been announced in Iran.
“This great scholar and mujahideen [bojownik] he sacrificed his life to build Iran… and is now among the great martyrs in heaven,” the state-affiliated Mehr news agency reported.
Earlier, the Israeli authorities and US President Donald Trump announced the death of the Iranian leader. “Khamenei, one of the most despicable people in history, is dead,” he wrote on the Truth Social platform.
Iran's supreme leader was killed during an attack by US and Israeli forces on Iran. According to Israeli media, Ali Khamenei was in an underground bunker and was killed along with several dozen of his closest associates.
The United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Saturday morning, indicating that strikes against targets in the country would continue in the coming days. In response, Iran fired missiles and drones at Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, including US military bases in the region.
In recent hours, explosions affected, among others: Dubai, Bahrain, Doha and Tel Aviv, and the media covered the reports from the impact sites. The damage included: five-star Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
