Sweden is losing popularity among Poles. More and more people are returning to the country


SCB data shows that last year, 2,546 Poles left Sweden, while 2,197 people from Poland decided to live in this country.

That's almost 25 percent. fewer new settlers than a year earlier, which confirms the decline in the popularity of Sweden as a migration destination for Poles.

At the end of 2025 98,311 people born in Poland lived in Sweden. Poles remain the fourth largest national group in the countrysecond only to citizens of Syria (over 194,000), Iraq (about 141,000) and Finland (about 122,000).

Sweden, which was one of the first European Union countries to open its labor market to Poles after Poland joined the community in 2004, has been an attractive destination for economic migration for years. However, the country is currently struggling with rising unemployment, which may influence migration decisions.
In 2025, the unemployment rate in Sweden was 8.8%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to the previous year. These data, based on the Labor Force Survey (AKU), highlight the difficulties facing the Swedish economy.
