Valentine's day, Cow holiday

Blaise of Sebaste, who is venerated on this day, is a Christian saint and martyr. In the 3rd and 4th centuries he lived in Asia Minor and served as a bishop in Cappadocia.

In Rus' the saint began to be called the patron saint of domestic animals. According to another version, the Christian Blasius in the minds of the people became the “heir” of the Slavic Volos, the guardian of peasant livestock.

On this day, they certainly fed domestic animals with the best food, and performed ritual rituals to protect livestock from evil spirits. To protect yourself from it, you need to tightly cover all chimneys with views or even cover them with clay. They turned to Saint Blaise with a prayer: “Give happiness to the sleek heifers, to the fat bulls, so that they can come and play from the yard, and come and gallop from the field.”

In many areas, Vlasiev Day was celebrated as a big holiday. At this time, crowded prayer services were held, during which loaves of rye bread were blessed, which the housewives then fed to the cattle. In any case, on this day they tried not to work at all – it was believed that this would help protect pets from death.

However, the holiday did not end well for all animals. On Blasius it was customary to slaughter a bull, a heifer or a pig and treat himself to a roast. This was very expedient: winter was coming to an end, food was decreasing, and it was becoming expensive to keep extra livestock. In addition, supplies of bread were melting, the peasant table was becoming scarce, and before Lent, people had to stock up on strength.

On the day of Blaise, cattle markets also began, when it was possible to sell or buy a cow at a profit.

The Vlasievo frosts were considered the last. People used to say: “The frost began to sing – the sled track froze over”; “If Vlasiy spills oil on the roads, it’s time for winter to put off its feet”; “Vlasiy, knock off the horn from winter.”
