The son of filmmaker Rob Reiner pleaded not guilty on Monday, in a Los Angeles court, in the trial in which he is accused of murdering his parents, reports AFP, taken over by Agerpres. Nick Reiner is accused of murder, for a double murder that rocked Hollywood in December 2025.

The bodies of his father, a renowned filmmaker who directed films such as “When Harry Met Sally” and “A Few Good Men,” and his mother, Michele Singer Reiner, were found on December 14 in their mansion in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The 78-year-old director and his 70-year-old wife were stabbed to death.

The mental health of their youngest son, who has a history of drug addiction and was diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago, will likely be at the center of this trial. He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, or even the death penalty, as it has not yet been formally abolished in California. This American state, led by representatives of the Democratic Party, instituted a moratorium on capital executions only in 2019.

At this stage of the trial, it is common for the defendant to plead not guilty, regardless of the subsequent strategy of the defense attorneys. Nick Reiner was not granted bail and will remain in custody before appearing in court again on April 29.

A lawyer has given up representing him

This hearing was supposed to take place in January, but was postponed because his lawyer, Alan Jackson, withdrew from representing him. His decision was motivated by “circumstances beyond our control”, explained the American lawyer, famous in Hollywood after defending Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey in court.

The lawyer stated, however, that he is forbidden “from a legal and ethical point of view” to explain his withdrawal from this process. But he wanted to make his analysis of the file known and assured that “Nick Reiner is not guilty of the crime”. In his place, the court appointed an ex officio lawyer to represent the accused.

Nick Reiner lived in an outhouse built on his parents' property. The day before the double murder, he allegedly disrupted a party organized by comedian and TV presenter Conan O'Brien, where he was invited along with his parents, according to the American media. According to the same sources, the son and father would then have argued violently.

According to the confidences made by a source from the family entourage for The New York Times daily, the Reiners should have had lunch with former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, on the day of the tragedy, and it seems that they had also scheduled a massage session that day.

A massage therapist went to their residence and, as he received no answer when he rang the doorbell, contacted the couple's daughter, Romy Reiner, according to the same American newspaper. She is the person who discovered his father's body, before the ambulance crew also found his mother's. American police arrested Nick Reiner several kilometers from the scene of the crime, a little later that same night.
