Photo and message for former Canadian prime minister posted by White House after USA wins Olympic gold in men's hockey

The White House released an image of a bald eagle digging its talons into the head of a Canadian goose on the X Network shortly after the United States men's ice hockey team defeated Canada in the Olympic final at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The image was published in response to an earlier message by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted at last year's 4 Nations: Face-Off tour, according to the Daily Mail.

“You can't take away our country — and you can't take away our game,” Trudeau wrote last February — almost a year away — after Canada defeated the United States in the NHL's international tournament.

President Donald Trump also reacted to the United States men's ice hockey team's overtime victory over Canada that gave them the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“Congratulations to our great USA hockey team. THEY WON THE GOLD,” US President Donald Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform. In another post, he wrote: “WOW — WHAT A MATCH!!!”.

The United States defeated Canada in the final of the Olympic hockey tournament, 2-1 after overtime, to capture the gold medal for the third time in history, but for the first time since 1980, on the final day of the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

The decisive goal for the United States was scored by Jack Hughes in the first two minutes of extra time.

“I love the USA. I love my teammates. It's unbelievable. The brotherhood on the USA Hockey team is so strong and we have so much support from former players. I'm so proud to be an American today,” said game hero Jack Hughes.
