European citizens who want to travel to the United Kingdom for tourist purposes, for visits or short stays must obtain, starting from February 25, 2026, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), the British Embassy in Bucharest announced on Tuesday, February 17.
According to the diplomatic mission, the ETA is a digital permit that allows multiple entries into the UK for two years or until the holder's passport expires. The cost of the authorization is £16 and the application can be submitted online, via the official UK ETA app or on the GOV.UK/ETA website.
“Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) coming into force soon! From 25 February 2026, European citizens, including Romanians, traveling to the UK for tourism, visit or short stay will need an ETA”, it says in an official post on the embassy's Facebook page.
Once approved, the ETA allows multiple trips to the UK for up to 6 months per visit. After submitting the application, the decision is sent by e-mail from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), usually within one day, but in some cases it can take up to 3 working days (Monday-Friday).
The confirmation email includes a 16-digit ETA reference number. During the entire period of validity of the authorization, the number of trips is unlimited, which facilitates repeated trips for tourist or family purposes.
