Donald Trump said he is expecting to make a decision on Iran very soon, the US President's statement coming after both countries said they had “positive” and “constructive” discussions in Oman on Saturday and agreed to meet at the end of this week.
Trump, who threatened with military actions if an agreement on the stop of Iran's nuclear program is not reached, told the journalists on Air Force One that he met with his advisers on Iran and is waiting for a quick decision. He gave no other details.
“We will make a decision about Iran very fast,” he said.
A second round of nuclear discussions between the United States and Iran would take place next Saturday in Rome, two sources that know the subject told Axios.
The discussions that took place on Saturday in Oman were the first between Iran and a Trump administration, taking into account the first 2017-2021 term of the US President. Officials said they took place in a “productive, calm and positive atmosphere”.
On Saturday, Trump told reporters that the discussions between the US and Iran are “good”, adding: “Nothing matters until you complete them, so I don't like to talk about it, but they go well. The situation with Iran is going pretty well, I think.”
Iran and the US held “productive” discussions on Saturday in Oman, and agreed to have a new meeting next week, Tehran said about the dialogue meant to address the Iranian nuclear program. The White House described the discussions in Oman as “a step forward”, according to AFP.
“I think we are very close to a basis for negotiations and, if we can conclude this base next week, we will have been a long way and we will be able to start real discussions,” said Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, for state television.
The statements came after Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a military action against Iran is “totally” possible and that it remained “very little time” to reach an agreement on the nuclear issue.
“If we have to use the strength, we will use the strength,” the US president said. “Israel will, of course, be very involved and will play the lead role,” Trump said.
