The paddock of horror from Suraia. Call for mobilization of associations for the protection of animals: “We have an emergency. Come!”

Several associations for the protection of animal rights launched a public call for emergency adoptions and takeovers, after the terrible images from the private dog shelter in Suraia, Vrancea county, where dogs were being mistreated and killed.
Volunteers from Kola Kariola and the Sache Vet Association announced on Facebook on Sunday that they are going to the scene to retrieve the surviving dogs and asked people to come adopt or help rescue them.
“We are on our way to Suraia. We hope that today there will be as many people as possible. People who come to adopt, to take over, to take the survivors out of a place where, just a few days ago, they would have suffered the same cruel death that we all saw. These dogs had to disappear quietly. Today, through you, they have a chance at life,” the representatives from the Sache Vet Association said.
The Suraia case has sparked strong reactions, and NGOs say the term “euthanasia” has been frequently used to describe what happened at the shelter, but they reject this wording.
“What happened in Suraia is murder with intent, without justice. They are acts of cruelty, not medical procedures. They are crimes, not euthanasia. (…) But today, before any debate, we have an emergency: the lives of those left there. Come. Adopt. Take them over. Help us get them out”, is the call made by the Sache Vet Association.
“Let no dog bark in Suraia anymore”
For his part, Marius Chircă, the founder of the NGO Kola Kariola, appealed to the associations in the country to go and take over the dogs from Suraia.
“I'm starting with a request to other associations to go and take the dogs. We have to prove that we associations are strong and we can take all the dogs. So that tomorrow, Monday evening, no dog will bark, bark in the Suraia shelter. Please from the bottom of our hearts, send a message, express your intention to go to Suraia. We are more inflamed than ever. The idea is that this is no longer the time to react on impulse. The priority is to remove to all the dogs there. Let's focus on not losing any dog's life,” said Marius Chircă, from Kola Kariola, in a live recording on Facebook.
The case of the dogs killed in Suraia
The case of the dog shelter in Suraia commune, Vrancea county, came into focus after images captured by a camera of tortured and killed dogs were published on the social networks of an NGO for the protection of animals.
The authorities' investigation was launched ex officio, and police and prosecutors conducted several searches on Friday to gather evidence about how the animals were cared for and whether the shelter's legal standards were met.
Three people were placed under judicial control in the case of the Suraia shelter, they being investigated for the crimes of killing animals with intent, without right, animal torture, abuse of office and intellectual forgery, IPJ Vrancea reported on Saturday.
The activity of the shelter was suspended, but the animals were not taken from the shelter, as there was no “imminent danger”.
“On February 13, the police officers of the Vrancea County Police Inspectorate, under the coordination of a prosecutor from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Focșani District Court, implemented six home search warrants, at the homes of four natural persons and at two workplaces of a commercial company. During these activities, documents were collected and necessary evidence was administered in the criminal case regarding the crimes of intentional, unlawful killing of animals, animal torture, abuse of office and intellectual forgery.
Following the administered evidence, on the evening of February 13, the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Focșani Court ordered the preventive measure of judicial control for a period of 60 days against three defendants, natural persons. At the same time, the proposal of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Focșani Court to the Focșani Court in order to take the measure of judicial control against a defendant, a legal person, was accepted”, Vrancea Police reported.
