The interim president of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, said on Wednesday, in a press conference in Cotroceni, that “the part of being a social conservative and to be an economic liberal is a good profile, but not the only one, for the National Liberal Party”.
Asked about Crin Antonescu's recent statement and if he sees in the former presidential candidate of the coalition a possible competitor for PNL leadership or a risk of breaking a part of the party, Ilie Bolojan explained: “Mr. Crin Antonescu and any politician, any candidate has his own opinions, which he supports and motivates me. Interim of the PNL, so my responsibility is limited to the results of the party, by its ideological profile.
“If I play a role in the next period, I assure you that I will work for PNL to change in such a way that it will come with new people, with high -performance people, to have an ideology as clear as possible, personally, without making any statement, I think that the part of being a social conservative and to be a good liberal, but not a good profile. Next for our country, at least on this political aisle, but these things will decide by our colleagues and cannot decide on one person or another, neither me nor someone, ”continued Ilie Bolojan.
Ilie Bolojan became the interim president of the PNL after the first round of the presidential elections of November 24, 2024, but resigned in February 2025, when, from the position of president of the Senate, he took over the interim presidency of Romania as a result of the resignation of Klaus Iohannis. In Cotroceni, he is to be invested with full powers, next week, Nicușor Dan, the winner of the election from May 2025, so that Ilie Bolojan can return to the party.
The question started from a statement made on Tuesday by Crin Antonescu, on Facebook, in which the former Coalition candidate said that it is a priority “to decide whether, in front of the neo -Marxist and globalist offensive, we abandon – as it has been for good years – representing the conservative right in gold.”
“In other words, let us decide whether it is the case that, at least now, by transforming an existing party or by the emergence of a new one, we have a solid democratic expression, coherent doctrinal and behavioral of the authentic right (and not the label fraudulently assumed by the neomarxist globalists from the USR and PNL),” added Crin Antonescu.
