The Pentagon has decided to send the largest American aircraft carrier, USS Gerald Ford, and its accompanying ships from the Caribbean Sea to the Middle East in preparation for a potential attack on Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

According to the newspaper, which cites US administration officials, the carrier and its accompanying strike group will bring dozens of fighters and reconnaissance planes to the region, allowing commanders to conduct more intense airstrikes. The daily notes that in addition to warships, the US also sent dozens of planes and several air defense systems to bases in the Middle East.
The USS Gerald Ford was originally sent to the eastern Mediterranean but was later redirected to the Caribbean as part of pressure on Venezuela. He also took part in the attack during which US forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
The aircraft carrier is the largest and most advanced ship of this type in the US Navyand the new orders will extend its planned mission out of port in Norfolk, Virginia. In the Middle East, it will join another aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, and nine other ships, including destroyers and amphibious assault ships. Transit from the Caribbean Sea usually takes about two weeks.
The order is issued against the background of further threats from President Donald Trump about the possible consequences if Iran does not agree to an agreement regarding its nuclear program. On Thursday, Trump estimated that Iran had about a month to conclude the deal, although he also admitted that he intended to negotiate as much as he wanted. However, he threatened that failure to reach an agreement would have “traumatic” consequences for Iran.
