In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, students of the Achinsk Mariinsky Gymnasium photographed a great-tailed owl, the directorate for specially protected natural areas of the region reported.
The bird was spotted sitting on a tree branch, where it was warming itself in the sun. The directorate noted that tawny owls lead a sedentary lifestyle and remain in the Krasnoyarsk Territory all winter. During frosts, they move closer to populated areas to find food there. This feature made it possible to take a photo.
Great-tailed owls are nocturnal animals. During the day, they lead a secretive lifestyle: they rest in the foliage of trees, hollows or on branches, digesting their night prey.
The diet of these birds consists mainly of mouse-like rodents. — voles, shrews, and sometimes squirrels. During periods of food shortage, the predator may choose larger prey — black grouse, hazel grouse, in cities — pigeons and rats.
The body length of the great owl is from 50 to 62 centimeters, the wingspan is about 130 centimeters. Females are usually slightly larger: their weight is from 600 to 1300 grams, males — from 400 to 1000.
