A new underground energy network will be built to the border with Lithuania

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) announced the designation of the route of the Harmony Link 220 kV Ełk Bis – Border of the Republic of Poland underground cable line. The total length of the connection will be approximately 100 km.

The new cable line will pass through six communes: Ełk and Kalinowo (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and Raczki, Suwałki, the city of Suwałki and Szypliszki (Podlaskie Voivodeship). Its construction will start in 2026 and last until 2030.

As part of the project, two new power stations will also be built: Norki and Wigry. The location of the Norki station is planned in the Kalinowo commune, and the Wigry station in the Suwałki commune.

The route was designed as closely as possible to the S61 Via Baltica expressway. This solution minimized interference with private agricultural land and forest areas.

PSE announced that the investment will have a positive impact on regional development plans, including the construction of high-speed railways and the connection of new customers in the Suwałki Special Economic Zone.

– The new cable power connection between Poland and Lithuania, together with the LitPol Link overhead line existing since 2016, will strengthen the process of synchronization of the Baltic states with the power system of continental Europe – informed Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne.

From February 2025, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia separated from the post-Soviet IPS/UPS system, thus joining the synchronous area in which all EU countries are located.

Due to its strategic importance, the investment is supported by the European Union. (PAP)
