According to Svetlana Petrenko, spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee of Russia, on the morning of February 6, 2026, an unidentified person fired several shots at Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseiev in a building on Volokolamskoie Road, northwest of the capital. Afterwards, the aggressor allegedly ran away.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, and his state of health has not been officially communicated, writes the BBC.
Alekseev occupies the second position in the GRU military secret service of Russia. He was involved in several military operations, including negotiations with Ukraine during the Mariupol siege in 2022.
The general was placed under European Union sanctions after Russian services were accused of being behind a 2018 nerve agent attack in Salisbury, Britain.
He has also in the past mediated conflicts with the Wagner mercenary group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.
The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case for attempted murder.
To date, the perpetrators of the attack are not known, and the investigation is ongoing.
This is the latest attack on a high-ranking Russian military official, following several similar incidents in the capital and other Russian cities in recent years.
