New information about “Wojtek from Zanzibar”. “The matter is complicated”


The spokesman for the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk, Mariusz Marciniak, informed PAP that the investigation, initiated in April 2022, was extended until August 7, 2026. Wojciech Żabiński ran tourist activities in Zanzibar, including hotels and other tourist attractions. He took advantage of the lack of restrictions at the beginning of the pandemic and tempted people with holidays in paradise surroundings. Several hundred people took advantage of false offers and were defrauded of several million zlotys.

Tanzania does not react in the case of “Wojtek from Zanzibar”
There are two more suspects in the case who – like “Wojtek from Zanzibar” – are also hiding abroad. The prosecutor accused, among other things, operating in an organized criminal group, illegal organization of tourist events and numerous frauds.
— The investigation is still collecting evidence necessary to substantively complete the preparatory proceedings. The case is multi-layered and complicated in legal and factual terms. There is a very large number of injured people with whom activities are carried out, prosecutor Marciniak told PAP.

Three suspects are hiding from law enforcement authorities and for this reason they have not been interrogated yet. According to investigators, legal actions are being taken during the investigation to arrest the suspects, who are probably staying in Zanzibar.
— For this purpose, the National Prosecutor's Office forwarded to the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tanzania, addressed to the authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania, the applications of the Regional Prosecutor in Gdańsk of May 30 and 31, 2023, for the extradition of Wojciech Ż., Dominik Ż. and Katarzyna Z., with a request to forward these documents to the competent authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania – added prosecutor Marciniak.
The requests of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk have not yet been implemented by the Tanzanian authorities. In the meantime, “Wojtek from Zanzibar” has a three-episode documentary series “The King of Zanzibar”, which presents the behind-the-scenes activities of his company Pili Pili and other companies related to the financial pyramid.
