In the next few years, Poland's sovereignty may be at risk, said PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński during the Economic Forum in Krynica on Wednesday. He indicated two possible scenarios: the adoption of a new “European arrangement” and the risk of war with Russia.

– The first scenario is the conclusion of the European agreement that is already on the table. Currently, those in power describe it as unrealistic because many countries are against it. But let us remember that earlier, also dangerous, European agreements were also considered unrealistic, and yet they have entered into force or are on the verge of entering into force, said Kaczyński.
According to the president of PiS, adopting a new agreement could deprive Poland of real influence on decisions in the European Union: – A state that cannot decide on its basic policies is not a sovereign state, and we do not have enough influence in the EU to be a co-decision maker. Such a measure would be a veto, but we will not have a veto after adopting this type of agreement, he noted.
Kaczyński added that the president is currently an “obstacle” to ratifying the changes: – It is known that he will not ratify it, because the final ratification is not the decision of the parliament, but of the president – he emphasized.
The second threat, in his opinion, is the risk of armed conflict.
– Putin is building an increasingly larger army despite the difficult situation. It is worth paying attention to the behavior of post-Soviet countries, such as Azerbaijan towards Russia. This shows that Russia's position is not as strong as it used to be, but the war is still going on and soon four years will pass – as long as the so-called the great patriotic war – he said.
The panel “Poland in turbulent times” took place as part of the Economic Forum in Krynica 2025. The conversation with Jarosław Kaczyński was led by historian and analyst Krzysztof Rak. (PAP)
