Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has become the subject of a fierce diplomatic dispute in recent weeks between the United States and Denmark and several supporting NATO countries.
In January, President Donald Trump returned to his long-held announcements of taking over the island, which is firmly opposed by the authorities in Copenhagen and Nuuk.
During Wednesday's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the American leader demanded the immediate start of negotiations regarding the acquisition of Greenland by the US. He also assured that the United States would probably not use force to take the island.
Following a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutt, Trump also announced on Wednesday that he had agreed on the framework for a future agreement on Greenland and the entire Arctic region. He added that he withdrew from the announcement of imposing tariffs on European countries that sent military delegations to Greenland. These countries are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the United Kingdom.
