As a result of Russian missile and drone attacks, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was completely cut off from external power sources, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Tuesday.

“As a result of hostilities, some electrical substations were damaged, which are of great importance for the nuclear safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants,” the IAEA wrote on the X website. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, quoted in the entry, said that the agency is monitoring developments to assess the impact of the incident on nuclear security.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called on the IAEA Board of Governors to respond decisively to the Russian attack.
This is using nuclear risk as an instrument of coercion, he wrote on X, adding that Russian attacks pose a constant threat to nuclear security.
In February 2025, as a result of a Russian drone strike, the sarcophagus built over reactor No. 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was damaged. According to IAEA experts, as a result of the attack, the structure lost its protective function. (PAP)
