Quick departure of German soldiers
Bundeswehr troops arrived in Greenland on Friday as part of a broader initiative by NATO countries and European allies that sent small military groups to the territory controlled by Denmark to prepare for future maneuvers. Although there was originally talk of extending their stay, the soldiers were informed to return to the country on Sunday morning, meaning their mission lasted only a little less than two days.

The US threatens tariffs, Europe sends soldiers
The decision to send troops was announced as a signal of European solidarity in keeping Greenland safe, but it coincided with US President Donald Trump's announcement to impose tariffs on eight European countries that had deployed forces to the island. Trump stated that such actions violate his vision of strategic partnership and American interests in the Arctic region.
The Bundeswehr emphasized that the fact-finding mission had been completed “as planned” and the results of the activities would be analyzed in Germany. JHowever, as the DPA agency writes, it is not clear to what extent geopolitical tensions and US tariff threats could have influenced the decision to end the stay of German soldiers early.
