The wave of extreme cold is spreading across the country, meteorologists announced, who updated the forecast on Sunday morning and issued new yellow frost alerts, valid until January 20.
The first yellow code frost alert came into force from 10.00 am and is valid until tonight, at 8.00 pm.
Targeted are the north and northeast of Moldova, as well as the east of Transylvania where the maximums will be around -10 degrees, and in the rest of Moldova, in the south and center of Transylvania, as well as in Dobrogea, Muntenia and Oltenia, particularly low temperatures will be recorded (on average, 7…9 degrees lower than normal for the date), with values that will generally fall between -8 and -4 degrees.
Later, from 20:00, the yellow code extends to most of the country, so minimum temperatures will generally fall between -20 and -10 degrees.
Bitter cold throughout the country
From Monday, January 19, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., another yellow frost code will come into force, targeting most of Moldova, southern, central and eastern Transylvania, as well as in Dobrogea, southern, central and eastern Muntenia and southern Oltenia, particularly low temperatures will be recorded (on average, 7…9 degrees lower than normal for the date), with values that they will generally fall between -8 and -4 degrees.
In the north of Moldova, as well as in the depressions and valleys of Transylvania, the frost will persist and there will be temperatures around -10 degrees.
Afterwards, from Monday evening, 8:00 p.m., until Tuesday, January 20, at 10:00 a.m., the frost covers the whole country, with the yellow code being issued everywhere.
“The weather will be frosty in most of the country, so the minimum temperatures will generally fall between -20 and -10 degrees,” ANM said.
As long as the frost lasts
At the same time, ANM issued a weather information for January 18-22.
In the mentioned interval, the cold wave will persist in most of the country. There will be frost during the nights and mornings in most areas, so the minimum temperatures will generally be between -20 and -6 degrees, and in the north and northeast of Moldova and on limited areas in Transylvania, the frost will persist during the day, with values around -10 degrees.
In the night from Wednesday to Thursday (January 21/22) there will be frost in the north and center of the country, where the thermal values will generally be between -17 and -9 degrees, and in the southern and southeastern regions, locally there will be mixed precipitation and snow will fall.
Temporarily there will be wind intensifications in the south of Banat and in limited areas in the south-eastern regions, with speeds generally of 40…50 km/h, amplifying the feeling of cold.
