Previously, the US president had already publicly questioned Denmark's ability to defend its territory and threatened to unilaterally annex or occupy the island, which was met with strong opposition from Copenhagen, the autonomous authorities of Greenland and the European Union. Speaking at the White House on Friday, Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on countries that do not support his plan to control Greenland.
He referred to the tariffs he imposed on imports of pharmaceutical products from the EU as part of efforts to lower drug prices in the US.
“I can do the same for Greenland. I can impose tariffs on countries that do not agree to take over Greenland because we need Greenland for national security” – said Donald Trump, quoted by the British daily “The Guardian”.

The threat of punitive tariffs by the Donald Trump administration is a powerful tool of economic pressurewhich may actually hit the foundations of European economies, forcing governments to balance political costs with economic ones.
For countries such as Denmark and Germany, this means the risk of a significant decline in exports, increase in prices of consumer goods and destabilization of supply chains.
