Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego on its mission for the future. What will change in 2026?

In 2026, BGK will consistently be faithful to its over 102-year-old mission supporting sustainable socio-economic development of the country. We will act in accordance with the adopted strategy and directions set by experts. The bank is an element of an efficient system whose task is to support the Polish economy. We want our country to become an effective supplier of high-quality goods and services for global technological leaders in the coming years and to join the group of these leaders.
An example of a systemic approach and synergy within development institutions in Poland is the recently announced Innovate Poland program, which BGK implements together with PFR group entities. Its aim is to provide capital support to the most innovative Polish enterprises that can both ensure technological independence and strengthen the Polish component in infrastructure projects and successfully enter global markets. It is the result of cooperation between the Ministry of Finance, institutions from the PFR group – including BGK, international development institutions and the commercial financial sector. The ability to engage in such cooperation is a basic condition for our economy to enter a new development model.

Innovate Poland is the first initiative in Poland that systematically combines public and private capital on a large scale. The program is one of the pillars of the state's development policy and an important element of the new capital market architecture. A total of at least PLN 4 billion may be invested through funds in approximately 250 enterprises. Innovate Poland is not only an investment program, but a long-term economic development project. Its effect will be the creation of a stronger capital market, a larger number of Polish companies with a global reach, as well as new jobs and an increase in the innovativeness of the economy. The program is also intended to keep intellectual and financial capital in the country – so that the profits from technological development remain in Poland.
In 2026, one of the main goals will be to support defense
One of the main tasks of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego for the coming year is defense support. For several years, the Armed Forces Support Fund, operated by the bank, has become one of the most important of the 20 funds operating at BGK. Its goal is to concentrate funds on the purchase of necessary weapons for the Polish army. FWSZ's plans for next year are: PLN 79.5 billion. This is a historically record amount.
In 2026 BGK will also manage the Security and Defense Fund (FBiO). As part of the fund, the bank will create a so-called special purpose vehicle (SPV) to finance defense and security investments, and more than half of its funds will be able to go to local governments for the construction and modernization of shelters.

We will support Poland's energy transformation
Next year, as indicated in our strategy for 2025-2030, we will continue to support Poland's energy transformation. For this purpose, we already use many sources of financing. We engage our own funds in the energy sector. Additionally, we have funds from the National Reconstruction Plan, the largest part of which is allocated to the energy sector – over PLN 90 billion. Energy transformation is a job that will last for years. And without it, it is difficult to achieve economic development. In the long term, the competitiveness of enterprises without access to relatively cheap and decarbonized energy is practically impossible. Energy transformation is therefore not only a response to climate change, but also an investment in a stable, safe future. Building a modern energy industry should be based on innovative solutions. Thanks to them, we will be able to reduce pollutant emissions, reduce costs and bills, and become independent.

A key investment for the country's security is the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland. As a development bank, we are interested in supporting this project. BGK is preparing to play a role in the financial assembly of the construction of a nuclear power plant. We plan to provide financing in Polish zlotys. Our current capacity amounts to nearly PLN 12 billion. However, the bank's specific share in financing this investment will depend on the assessment of the final business and financial model and on the assessment of the scale of risk accompanying this project.
BGK is also interested in: Port Poland. A strategic infrastructure project that includes the construction of one of the largest transport hubs in Europe – a modern international airport with a road network. We look at each such project carefully, even if it is in the preparatory phase.
BGK plans to help in the restructuring of hospitals
The challenge for 2026 will be further implementation of BGK's own programs. This includes handling public funds, supporting exports, implementing government programs – including surety and guarantee programs for SMEs, and own guarantee and surety activities.
It is also an important element BGK's continued support for local governments. The main challenges in this area are building the resilience of local governments, health care, housing and social exclusion. BGK will continue to be involved in supporting local government investments, implementing government housing programs, as well as restructuring assistance for hospitals – planned assistance in restructuring the financial liabilities of the facilities.

Next year we will develop analytical resources. Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego plans to regularly publish reports and analyzes for clients, investors and the media. We want to be a hub of expert knowledge and competences in the field of financing development projects. BGK not only implements key government programs and infrastructure investments, but also provides knowledge, analyzes and innovative solutions supporting the Polish economy. Our mission isn't just banking – it's building a base of knowledge and competences that drive Poland's development. We also have other important tasks ahead of us, including: with the digitization of the bank, the implementation of a new central IT system responsible for the use of AI tools and the modernization of the bank's headquarters.
