Fraudsters impersonate employees of marketplaces, delivery services, utility workers, doctors and other organizations in order to lure authorization codes from State Services. The press center of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs warned about this.
“Complex, multi-component attacks now in most cases begin with luring out the authorization code and simulating hacking of a citizen’s account on the State Services portal,” TASS quotes the department’s comment.
Most often callers say
-
from marketplaces: “You have a delivery, a parcel, you need to confirm your identity so that we can transfer it to the courier”;
-
from utility services: “We are changing the intercom at the entrance, how many keys do we need? Great, now dictate the code to link the keys to the phone number”;
-
from medical organizations: “You have an appointment, but you need to confirm that you are you. We’ll send you the code via SMS”;
-
from Russian Post: “You have received a registered letter, log in to our chatbot to get a tracking number”;
-
from universities: “You have not been certified and are not allowed to take the exam, but you can take the test on our website”;
-
from supposedly law enforcement officers: “We are from the bank security service, the police or the prosecutor’s office.”
Police advise stopping the conversation immediately if the other person asks for the code from an SMS.
Before the New Year, scammers launched a new scheme – they offer Russians to “profitably invest their savings” at a high interest rate. Such offers are designed to deceive gullible citizens and steal their savings. It is important to remain vigilant and not believe promises of super profits.
