The construction of a 280-kilometer fence separating Latvia from Russia was completed on Tuesday, after several years of work and an investment of 166 million euros, EFE and Agerpres inform.

According to Latvian TV station LRT, the construction of this border barrier was completed on Tuesday, making it one of the “most important infrastructure projects for national security”, according to the Baltic country's Ministry of Interior.

About six companies worked on the installation of this new physical barrier with Russia, intended, among other things, to improve border control.

The project had a budget of 166 million euros, to which another 20 million euros will be added next year, intended especially for infrastructure patrols and surveillance technologies.

Latvia, together with the Baltic States Lithuania and Estonia, Poland and the other nations of Eastern Europe, requested the European Union (EU), at a summit in Helsinki, on December 16, to prioritize projects for common defense, in a geopolitical context marked by the hostile behavior of Russia.
