Folk calendar

Modestov Day

On this day, the memory of St. Modest, who served as archbishop in Jerusalem in the 7th century, is celebrated.

In Rus', Saint Modest was considered the guardian of livestock, so they prayed to him for protection from death and predatory animals. On this day, men usually organized fraternities – joint feasts, at which meat dishes were certainly served. In this way the saint was thanked for caring for the flocks. But women on Modest were forbidden to play cards: they said that otherwise in the summer the chickens would start pecking at the cucumbers.

You could predict your fate for the next year using Modest. To do this, they lay down on the current where they threshed bread, and listened: if a fortuneteller knocks, he will die, if it rings, a wedding, and if threshing is heard, he will be rich.

In the evening of this day, they took 12 boxes of salt, each of which was named after one of the months, and the next morning they checked: in which box the salt was soaked, that month would be wet. Separately, they predicted the weather for June: it should be the same as on Modest’s Day.
