Folk calendar
Agey Inesei
On this day, the memory of Saint Haggai, one of the last prophets of the Old Testament, is celebrated. According to legend, he lived 500 years before the birth of Christ.
In Rus', on Ageya (Haggai) Inesei, they closely monitored the weather, especially paying attention to frost. If he densely strewn the branches of trees and buildings, this foreshadowed warm Christmastide. This happened often. “Agei the prophet is sowing frost on the threshold,” people said that day. If there was severe frost in the morning, then he could hold out until Epiphany.
The peasants also looked at how the snow lay near the fences. If the snowdrifts leaned close to the fence, it meant that the summer would be lean. Also, the weather on Agea was used to judge what April would be like.
