A metal sponge is rightfully considered the main rescuer of burnt pans and has long earned a place in the arsenal of housewives. But its potential is much wider than it seems. With a careful approach, it turns into a universal assistant for non-standard tasks.
Experienced housewives told how to use a metal sponge not only for washing dishes.
1. For cleaning root vegetables
A rigid stainless steel sponge will carefully and economically remove the thin top layer from potatoes, carrots or beets.
- Lightly moisten the vegetable.
- Using a circular motion, treat its surface with a sponge.
- After cleaning, rinse the root vegetables thoroughly under running water to remove possible metal microparticles.
2. For glass vases and decanters
Stubborn limescale deposits inside narrow vessels can be easily removed.
- Fill the container with hot water, adding 1-2 tbsp. l. citric acid.
- Dip a small piece of fiber (not mesh) metal sponge inside.
- Gently shake and rotate the vessel, allowing the sponge to move along all the walls.
- Leave the solution for 30-60 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
3. To clean fish from scales
This is one of the most effective and cleanest ways. A separate sponge, dedicated only to the kitchen, removes scales quickly, does not tear the skin and minimizes their scattering throughout the kitchen.
4. For cleaning plumbing fixtures
To restore chrome faucets to their original shine, prepare a simple paste.
- Mix citric acid and baking soda in equal parts, diluting with water to form thick sour cream.
- Apply to problem areas, leave for 10-15 minutes.
- Rub gently with a damp metal sponge and buff dry with a soft cloth.
Where not to use metal sponge
A powerful abrasive requires conscious use. Strictly avoid sharpening knives and knives, or cleaning delicate surfaces (non-stick coating, enamel, varnish, acrylic, glass ceramics). Also, the sponge is not suitable for aluminum cookware.
Use the sponge spot-on and always finish the job by thoroughly washing the treated items.
