Fiat 126p for decades it was an inseparable element of the landscape of Polish streets. The prepayment system for passenger cars operated in Poland in the years 1982-1985. At that time, potential buyers had to pay money upfront and wait, sometimes for many years, for the vehicle to be produced. Many of them never saw the order fulfilled – a total of 342,000. people to whom the state has been paying compensation for years.

The Ministry of Finance has published new compensation rates for unused prepayments for Fiat 126p and Fiat 125 passenger cars (FSO 1500).
In the first quarter of 2026, compensation rates will amount to almost PLN 20,000. PLN for people who made advance payments for Fiat 126p, and approximately PLN 30,000. PLN for those who prepaid for FSO 1500. Despite this, according to the Ministry of Finance, the number of applications for payment of funds is marginal.

“As part of ongoing monitoring, the Ministry of Finance has noticed a negligible number of applications for compensation payments in recent years to people who made prepayments for the purchase of Fiat 126p or FSO 1500 passenger cars in 1981 and have not yet collected the car,” the ministry said.
Data for 2025 (as of November 12) show that no compensation has been paid this year for prepayments for these car models. There are currently 238 unaccounted for cases. In the years 2015-2024, only 10 such payments were made.

Fiat 126p and FSO 1500. Is this the end of the compensation program?
Deputy Finance Minister Jarosław Neneman had already signaled the possibility of withdrawing from the program. “The Ministry of Finance is currently conducting analyzes aimed at abandoning the quarterly indexation of the compensation amount and extinguishing the program resulting from the Act on the principles of making prepayments for passenger cars,” Neneman said in response to a parliamentary question.
When asked about the validity of these plans, the Ministry of Finance replied in an interview with “Fakt” that “taking into account the rationalization of the compensation payment process, it will keep us informed about any changes that would be introduced in connection with the above-mentioned compensations.”

Fiat 126p and FSO 1500. How to get compensation?
People who still have prepayment books can go to a PKO Bank Polski branch with an ID card. The bank pays the accumulated funds with interest and is additionally entitled to compensation.
However, it is worth remembering that the condition for receiving it is regular payments to the prepayment account, without interruptions in making them.
