A major fire broke out on Wednesday morning at the Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena, Spain's Murcia region. Firefighters and medical personnel urgently evacuated the patients and announced that there were no victims, reports El Pais.

The fire was reported to 112 around 07.30, through more than 30 calls. The flames broke out on the terrace on the fifth floor of the hospital, according to sources from the Government of the Region of Murcia quoted by El Pais.

Images captured by witnesses and published on social networks showed the fire spreading mainly on the facade of one of the hospital buildings, causing a thick cloud of smoke.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Cartagena Mayor Noelia Arroyo announced that four floors of the hospital, from the second to the fifth, had been evacuated.

Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading and were still working to extinguish the fire during the morning.

The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, said the fire “was very dramatic”. The Murcian Health Service and hospital staff are working to move patients from the affected wards to safer areas. According to López Miras, “50 beds are being moved to the Santa María del Rosell Hospital and also to the Los Arcos del Mar Menor Hospital.”

Local police advised drivers to avoid the area around Santa Lucía Hospital to facilitate the work of emergency services. Municipal officers were deployed in the area and on surrounding roads to manage traffic.
