In Rus' at this time the wedding weeks were ending. The next marriages took place only after the end of winter – on Maslenitsa or on Krasnaya Gorka. Therefore, girls and boys who did not meet their fate had to wait until spring and envy their more successful girlfriends and friends.
Ivan (John) was paid attention to the signs: if it snowed or rained, then one could count on prolonged thaws – until the Introduction. “If there is snow on Ivan, then winter will not move until the Introduction”; “If it rains on Ivan, then it will be the same before the Introduction,” people said.
Riddles were made about the snow that often covered the ground on this day. Many of them have survived to this day: “The tablecloth clothed the whole world with white”; “A white blanket lay on the ground. Summer has come, it has all gone away”; “White Tikhon has been pushed out of the sky, where he runs and covers it with a carpet.”
