How the passion of love, the fate of Romania, has changed. The lovers were giving nightmares to the royal house

The family of King Ferdinand I, the second monarch of Romania and the one whose name is the constitution of Greater Romania, was strongly affected by a true “curse of love”. Both sons of the king had adventures inappropriate for the rank and gave up the throne for women.

Hohenzollerni has strongly marked the history of Romania. The kings of this illustrious Prussian family helped our country to take the decisive step towards modernity, independence and even to the constitution of Greater Romania. But the dynasty of the German kings of Romania was also touched by the “curse of love”, during the reign of Ferdinand I, one of the most important monarchs on the throne of our country. Specifically, both sons gave up the throne and actually dismissed the dynasty, in the name of love.
A shame for the royal house: the inheriting prince deserts and runs away with an actress
Ferdinand I suffered enormously because of the sentimental appetite of his sons. The King of Romania said and the “integrator” for the contribution to the 1918 Union, had five children. Three boys and two girls. One of the boys, Prince Mircea, died at the age of three. The other two boys, Carol and Nicolae played a very important role in the history of Romania. However, they are considered to have never taken responsibility seriously. And this under the conditions in which they put above their own sentimental life. The most scandalous was the love life of the Carol Prince, the future King Carol II.
Carol was the first child of King Ferdinand and Queen Mary. He was born on October 15, 1893 and was the first Hohenzollern raised, as the German King's commitment had made, in the spirit and traditions of the country. That is why it was said about Carol that he was a German with Balkan education, and this could be easily seen later. In any case, Prince Carol, the heir of the throne has disappointed his family as well as the country. He had an unusual passion for women, scandalizing public opinion. Especially in the conditions in which he did not endeavor to respect the label and eventually the sacrifices necessary for an inheriting prince. For Carol personal feelings were more important than the country itself. In the First World War, Carol laughed at her family for Ioana Maria Valentina Lambrino, the daughter of General Constantin Lambrino. It actually passes the border into the Russian Empire and marries Zizi Lambrino in Odessa. Send home a telegram announcing his father of the decision made. “I got married to Zizi Lambrino. Can I go back with her or take the path of France?” The Prime Minister of Romania, Alexandru Marghiloman asked for the dismantling of Prince Carol.
“I consulted ministers and presidents; I did not talk to those in the opposition, but I know the general opinion of the public. The prince must be declared decay of his prerogatives; Prince Nicolae proclaimed in his place and for him made a severe and serious education (….)Prince (Carol) is not loved. It is completely indifferent and proved a lack of judgment, which is not a promise for the future“, Marghiloman told King Ferdinand. The king made an attempt. TRON.
The prince gave up the throne four times out of the passion for women
To make him forget Zizi Lambrino, King Ferdinand married Carol with Princess Elena of Greece and Denmark, in 1921. The marriage did not last long. Carol challenged any dynastic rule and did not seem aware, as Marghiloman had noticed, his role as a heir to the throne. Not long after, the heir prince, who had already given up the throne twice, falls in love with Elena Lupescu, the daughter of a Jewish pharmacist. For her part, Elena Lupescu was married to officer Ion Tâmpeanu, when the relationship with Prince Carol began.
To the stufts of the Royal House but also of the politicians, Prince Carol commits a very serious new error. In 1925, taking advantage of a funeral in the United Kingdom, where he represented the Royal House, Prince Carol runs with Elena Lupescu. He renounces the right to the throne again and lives in England, along with his mistress, under the name of Carol Caraiman. In 1927, Ferdinand I died leading to the opening of a dynastic and political crisis. Carol's successor, Mihai I, his son with Princess Elena of Greece, was just a child. The regency was provided by the Patriarch Miron Cristea, Prince Nicolae (Prince Carol's brother) and Gheorghe Buzdugan, the president of the High Court of Justice and Cassation. Not long after, Carol Caraiman realized he wanted to become king. Without any scruples, he negotiated with the peasants of Iuliu Maniu and managed to overthrow his own son. Carol returned to Romania and became king in 1930 under the name of Carol II. He never gave up the relationship with Elena Lupescu.
The second son kicked out of the royal house because of a love obsession
The second son of King Ferdinand I with Queen Maria, was Nicolae, who was lined with parents and “Nicky”. He was born on August 5/18, 1903, in Pelișor Castle, in Sinaia. It was the fourth child of the couple Ferdinand-Maria and was the favorite nephew of King Carol I. being the younger brother of the inheriting prince, Nicky dedicated to the sport and the world life. Although he loved the arts, Nicolae was sent to the famous military college Eton in the UK. Returning to the country, it continued to be a regular presence in the worldly salons and to fulfill the role of patron of the different sports associations. He was leading a good and peaceful life to Peleș. Until 1927, when he was forced to be part of the regency of Prince Mihai, his nephew. Totally disinterested in politics, Prince Nicolae supported Carol, his brother, when he returned to the country and lobby for him to be received back as an inheriting prince and then as a king.

His only interest was to get rid of the responsibility received and to return to worlds and sports. The curse of love reached and the second boy of King Ferdinand I. Prince Nicolae falls in love with Ioana Dolette, Radu Săveanu's wife. The two meet for a while in secret. Ioana Dolette divorced and Prince Nicolae rushed to ask her in marriage. In order not to inflame the scandal, Radu Săveanu is sent as the vice-consul of Romania in Brussels, a sad compensation for the loss suffered but especially for the swallowed shame. In order to marry, however, Ioana Dolette, Prince Nicolae had to gain the acceptance of the Royal House. Given that the divorced young woman did not come from a royal house, the acceptance was almost impossible. Carol II, the new king of Romania did not give the acceptance, to Prince Nicolae. Even so, the second son of King Ferdinand secretly married Ioana Dolette, in 1931. At the request of Carol II, the marriage was annulled by the Ilfov Tribunal. In 1937, Prince Nicolae was set to choose between the royal family and the marriage with Ioana Dolette.
Without hesitation, Prince Nicolae chose to give up the royal status and leave the country with his wife. The two moved to Laussane, to Switzerland. Prince Nicolae received, from the Romanian state, a beautiful amount, monthly and at the same time he had six servants and a driver. Prince Nicolae had become Nicolae Brana, a man as ordinary as possible. Because of the refusal to recognize the marriage with Ioana Dolette, Nicky always hated King Carol II. However, he was the only one who came to his brother's funeral. “I came to Carol's funeral, because I felt it was my duty, although I hated my brother more than anything in the world. Carol was my brother and king.”he said in 1953.
