A terrible tragedy happened in the village of Plopi, Bunești-Averești commune, where an 82-year-old woman lost her life after being attacked by a pack of dogs. The animals simply ate her right hand up to almost the shoulder and no one heard her desperate cries. The incident took place in an abandoned park, known to the locals as “Găzărie”, located in the middle of the village, but isolated and unsupervised.

The Vremea nouva publication quotes witnesses who say that at the time the woman was attacked by the pack of dogs, she was returning from the church, where she had attended the service and received communion, and that when her body was discovered, she still had a bag of food in her left hand, received alms at the place of worship, while her right hand had actually been eaten up to almost the shoulder.

According to the same source, she was heading to a sister-in-law and, in order to avoid the loop of the communal road, the old woman chose to cut short the road through the park.

The tragedy was discovered later, during the afternoon of Saturday, November 22, the one who alerted the authorities was the local councilor Constantin Iftene, who called 112 in terror.

“I can't believe that aunt Viroana, who every Saturday used to go to her sister-in-law, took that shortcut, to Găzărie. There are no houses in that area, that's why I found it so hard. I'm very angry, because if we had a public transport that passed through the area, maybe someone would have seen it. Think in what agony this woman died and what screams there were!“, said the local councilor, emphasizing that he made several approaches to his colleagues in the local administration and to the mayor for the establishment of a bus station.

For his part, the mayor Vasile Tărăgan, for his part, was shocked by what happened, especially since, he says, no report was received regarding the presence of stray dogs within the radius of the commune.

“I know this old woman, a woman of all prowess. But what a cruel death she had. I don't understand what pack of dogs
hungry to have been in the area, to attack her in such a manner. We don't have stray dogs in our commune, but someone in the area may have let them loose in our area, as is usually the case, unfortunately. Or maybe it migrates from somewhere.

I have never received any warning in this regard from the locals at the town hall. I also found out about the place where it happened, our advisor, Constantin Iftene, called me and told me the story. Indeed, the area is deserted, even if it is somewhat in the middle of the village. The road makes a loop, but aunt Viroana, in order to get to her sister-in-law faster, took it straight. It's a great sin, and we, the mayor's office, will take measures to track down this damned pack of dogs”, said Vasile Tărăgan, the mayor of Bunești Averești commune.
