At least five people were killed and more than 130 were injured by a tornado that devastated part of a village in the southern Brazilian state of Parana on Friday, local authorities said, according to France Presse.

“The Paraná Civil Defense announces with sadness that five deaths have already been confirmed as a result of the tornado” that hit the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, the authority says in a press release

According to images released by the media, the wind overturned several cars and destroyed entire houses in the town, located about 300 kilometers from the famous Iguaçu Falls.

“The first information also indicates that there are 30 seriously and moderately injured and about 100 lightly injured,” the civil defense said.

The damage was concentrated in the city of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, which has 14,000 inhabitants, according to the Technology and Environmental Monitoring System of Parana.

Authorities estimated that winds there reached speeds between 180 and 250 km/h. Trees and even concrete houses fell. Remote footage of the tornado was posted on social media.

For his part, the governor of the state of Paraná, Ratinho Junior, announced that “security forces (were) on alert, mobilized and (supervised) the cities affected by the violent storms”, on X.

The National Institute of Meteorology maintains a “storm danger” alert throughout the state of Paraná, as well as the southern states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, bordering Argentina and Uruguay.
