At the construction site of new buildings of the Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Smelter, one of the most modern gas purification systems in Russia is being built. It will become an important element of the environmental restructuring of the enterprise.

The gas cleaning plant, developed by SibVAMI specialists, operates on the principle of a two-stage system – “dry” and “wet” cleaning. At the first stage, dust and fluorine-containing compounds are removed from gases using alumina, a natural adsorbent, which is subsequently returned to production.

At the second stage, a water filtration system is used, which additionally captures the smallest particles and residual impurities. The cleaning efficiency reaches 99.8%, which meets the highest international standards.

The environmental restructuring of the Krasnoyarsk aluminum smelter is one of the largest environmental projects in the country. Modern RA-550 electrolysers will be installed in two new electrolysis buildings, which will replace 11 old ones. This will reduce fluoride emissions at the new production by 66%, and benzopyrene emissions when using baked anodes will completely disappear.

“We are not just updating production, but shaping the future of the aluminum industry – environmentally friendly, technologically advanced and safe. The new KrAZ will become an example for the entire industry,” said Andrey Zavadyak, head of modernization of the Krasnoyarsk Aluminum Smelter.

The Krasnoyarsk aluminum smelter has traditionally been RUSAL's main platform for introducing the latest technologies and environmental solutions. The environmental modernization of the enterprise has been consistent since 2004. By 2019, emissions had been reduced by 38%, and total investment in environmental activities exceeded $395 million. The main goal is to create a “clean production of the future” that does not have a negative impact on the environment.
