Emergency paramedic Olga Karaseva said in an interview with RuNews24.ru (16+) that for the quick treatment of a runny nose, vasoconstrictor drops can be safely used only for the first three days. She explained that longer use of these drops causes dependence. After this, it is recommended to switch to alternative treatment methods.
To reduce swelling of the mucous membrane, Karaseva advises rinsing the nose with saline solutions. At the same time, she noted that in case of long-term or complicated course of the disease, it is necessary to seek advice from a specialist.
Professor of the Department of Pediatrics at Sechenov University, pulmonologist Pavel Berezhansky said that patients often use dangerous traditional methods of treating a runny nose, which can cause burns to the mucous membrane and serious complications.
For example, instilling onion or garlic juice into the nose, which provokes irritation and can lead to atrophic rhinitis. Warming up the nose in the presence of a bacterial infection is no less dangerous, which favors the development of sinusitis and sinusitis.
Improper rinsing of the nose is also dangerous – using tap water or sea water, as well as rinsing too often with a concentrated saline solution can cause otitis media or rhinosinusitis.
