People's calendar

Sergey Kaputnik, chicken coop

On this day, Orthodox people celebrate the memory of the greatest ascetic of the Russian land – Sergius of Radonezh.

On Sergei Kaputnik, Russian people as usual chopped cabbage, harvesting it for the winter. Experienced housewives knew that it was necessary to salt cabbage with the first frosts – not earlier, otherwise it would acidify. The whole family was engaged in salting: the children cleaned carrots and apples, the old people cut them. Men and women were slaughtered with cabbage, folded into tubs, covered with salt, added carrots, apples, lingonberries or cranberries. On a cabbage sheet, delicious cakes baked. When the dough was put on the sheet, they prayed that the winter would pass safely. Pies with cabbage were also served on the table on this day.

The second nickname, the chicken coop, went to the saint for the fact that he was considered a keeper of poultry, especially chickens. True, why Sergius of Radonezh fell such an “honor”, is difficult to say.

Sergey was judged by the establishment of winter. If the first snow fell on the coming night, they waited for the day on Mikhailov’s day, if the weather was clear, then the next three weeks should have been the same. They also watched the wind: if he blew from the north, it foreshadowed the cold winter, if from the south – warm, if from the west – snowy.
