Folk calendar

Kuzma Ogorodnik

On that day the Venerable Cosmas of Chalcedon is honored. In Rus' it was cuckoo day: at this time it begins to cuckoo in forests and groves. There were several signs associated with this bird: if the cuckoo crowed, it was time to sow flax; a cuckoo crows on a dry tree – to frost. It was also believed that if a cuckoo flies around the village, there will be a fire.

Carrots and beets were traditionally sown on Kuzma (Kosma). It is interesting that in Rus' women were engaged in planting and weeding vegetables – and not only because this work was easier than, for example, plowing. It was believed that everything planted by a man would bloom but not bear fruit. While digging the beds, they said: “Kuzma came, looked into the cellars, took a shovel, and dug up the soil near the hut.”

Before sowing, peasant women went in the morning to secret springs, which were called votive students, and moistened the seeds in water, and threw copper coins at the bottom of the spring. According to another custom, the seeds were supposed to be soaked in river water for three mornings. This had to be done secretly, otherwise the harvest would be poor – after all, an envious eye could do a lot of harm. People said: “Another eye is envious, and envy is like rust – it will eat the entire harvest.” And if you eat at least one seed from those prepared for planting, all the grown vegetables will be devoured by a worm.

The upcoming weather was judged by various signs. A warm start to May was a sure sign that cold weather would begin at the end of the month, and vice versa. On this occasion they said: “For Kuzma, to plow in a shirt is to sow in a fur coat.” If May turned out to be cold, the year promised to be fertile. Heavy rains also foreshadowed a good harvest. By the way, the hair was wetted with the first rain so that it would grow thick, like May grass.

A person born on Kuzma’s day was supposed to be a good gardener, take care of vegetables, and work hard on the beds. In this case, his fate will be successful.
