Experts found out how young people choose bank cards for themselves

Banking experts conducted a survey among young people and found out what affects their choice of a bank to open a card.

The results of the VTB survey conducted to the FINOPOLIS 2025 forum showed that half of young people under 25 years old draw up a debit card in adolescence, and most of them actively use several cards.

Most Russians under 25 use 2-3 cards, 27 % has only one active card, and 16 % have 4 or more. The number of debit cards in young people in different regions is noticeably different: in the North-Western Federal District, half of the respondents cost one card, the youth of the Southern Federal District in 83 % of cases prefer to keep 2-3 cards in the wallet, and in the Central Federal District 43 % more often use 4 or more cards. Among the inhabitants of Siberia, one card has a third of the respondents, another 61% use 2-3 cards.

Most of the respondents said that they independently decide on the choice of a bank to issue their first card. 37 % consulted with relatives, but made the final choice themselves. Even a third indicated that they made the decision on their own, and 27 % trusted the opinion of the family and friends.

The results of the survey showed what factors affect the choice of the first card among young people:

  • Convenient mobile application (chose 60 % of respondents);
  • free maintenance (55 %);
  • Loyalty and bonuses program (47 %);
  • Service speed and convenience of services (35 %);
  • Stylish map design (17 %).

Important importance when choosing a bank for 75 % of youth surveyed is their attitude to the brand. This indicator is especially high in the southern (89 %) and central (86 %) federal districts, as well as in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region (80 %). In Siberia, this criterion is guided by 68 % of respondents.

Most often, young people pay for purchases in supermarkets and stores – this was noted by 53 % of respondents in the whole country. And the highest share in Siberia is 66 %. On online buying accounts for 21 %, and another 10 % use a card to pay for public transport.
