So far, the number of the dead is of “37, (…) and 26 people are still missing”said Yudhi Bramantyo, director of the National Search and Salvation Agency, in a statement. A previous balance indicates 17 dead.

“Sunday morning, the (total) number of the evacuated victims is 141: 104 are saved, and 37 are deceased”he added, quoted by Agerpres.

More than 100 students had gathered for the afternoon prayers at the Islamic boarding school Al-Khtery in the city of Sidoarjo, East Java, when the building collapsed unexpectedly, reported the official Antara press agency, citing a witness.

Failure to comply with construction standards causes serious concerns about the safety of buildings in Indonesia.

At the beginning of September, three people were killed and other tens were injured following the collapse of a building that housed a prayer room in Western Java.
