Sarah Mullaly was named the new Archbishop of Canterbury on Friday, thus becoming the spiritual leader of the 85 million Anglicans worldwide and the first woman holding this position, according to CNN.
The 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullaly, replaces Justin Welby, who resigned in November last year because of a scandal of child abuse.
It inherits an institution that has long faced theological schisms about approaching homosexual couples and the role of women in the church.
Mullaly, 63, was appointed bishop of London in 2018 – the third bishop in the Anglican Church, after the Archbishop of Canterbury and York.
Before ordained, Mullaly worked as a nurse in London hospitals, then held the position of medical director for England and director of the patient's experience in the National Health Service.
