The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the approval of Leukorine, a form of folic acid believed that US President Donald Trump is to recommend it as a treatment for autism symptoms at an event organized at the White House, reports Reuters.
FDA has published an announcement on this medicine in the federal register.
The GSK pharmaceutical giant previously produced Leucorina and marketed it under the name Wellcovorin. The company withdrew the drug on the market, but not for safety or efficacy reasons.
The announcement in the Federal Register A citrates “patient data on over 40 patients, including adults and children”, to support the drug may relieve the symptoms of folate brain deficit (CFD). The folate, the natural form of vitamin B9, is an essential nutrient involved in cell growth, DNA synthesis and the formation of red blood cells, being necessary for optimal functioning of the body. A folate deficiency can increase the risk of heart disease through high levels of homocysteine and can lead to serious congenital malformations in the fetus, as well as to an increased risk of cancer. The folate is present in many vegetables with green, legume and citrus leaves, while folic acid is the form of synthesis.
According to registration in the federal register, CFD has been reported in patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms, including autistic features.
