Liz Truss Claims UK Could Launch Mars Missions by 2040

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss has claimed that the United Kingdom could have initiated successful missions to Mars within just a few years had her 49-day tenure not been cut short. This assertion is detailed in her newly released book, “Bank Job,” published on Monday.
In the book, Truss argues that the actions of the Bank of England destabilized the bond market and led to her government’s downfall following the turbulence caused by her 2022 mini-budget, as reported by Politico.
The final chapter provides a vivid portrayal of what life might look like in 2040 if her policies had been fully implemented. Truss envisions multiple missions to Mars already launched from the UK’s spaceport.
Additionally, she presents other more realistic political dreams, imagining a 2040 Britain free from European Union laws, a permissive regime for artificial intelligence, and lower energy costs alongside shorter planning timelines that have positioned the UK as a leader in AI innovation.
Truss also speculates that Bitcoin would benefit from favorable tax treatment as a medium of exchange for commercial purposes, stating that no central bank digital currency would be introduced.
Since her departure from office, following a revolt within her own party, Truss has dismissed claims that her economic decisions—including substantial financial aid for energy bills and tax cuts funded through new borrowing—were responsible for the pound’s collapse. Instead, she has blamed the central bank, Treasury, and Office for Budget Responsibility for acting against her interests. Her book directly criticizes the Bank of England for proposing to sell £80 billion in government bonds before the mini-budget but delaying the sale amid market turmoil.
Truss lost her mandate in the House of Commons in the 2024 general election and has since been involved in launching the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the UK.
