Moldova Expels Russian Diplomat Following Drone Incident

Moldova has declared a Russian diplomat at its Chisinau embassy persona non grata following the crash of an explosive-laden drone near residential areas in the Telenești district on Friday. In response, Moscow issued a statement on Saturday promising a “firm response,” while asserting that the drone’s Russian origin has not been substantiated, according to reports.
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry characterized the incident as a serious violation of the country’s sovereignty and security, posing a direct threat to its citizens. President Maia Sandu stated that the Russian-made attack drone, identified as a “Gheran,” breached Moldova’s airspace and crashed near residential homes and an energy facility, as reported by MOLDPRES.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, rejected the accusations, calling them an “unfounded pretext.” She claimed that the drone’s Russian origin has not been proven and accused Chisinau authorities of pursuing an “anti-Russian” policy, warning that the expulsion decision would not go unanswered, as reported by France Presse.
According to the Moldovan Defense Ministry, two incidents of airspace violations were recorded between October 16 and 23. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious drones or debris by calling 112 and to avoid touching or moving such objects.
