Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in Moscow. This visit coincides with a summit of gas-exporting nations, as reported by AFP.
Iran and Russia, both heavily sanctioned countries, have developed close political ties. Their military and economic partnership has strengthened since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, according to France Presse.
The Iranian president is attending the gas summit on October 27, as indicated by the Iranian ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali.
During their discussions, Pezeshkian and Putin are expected to address “economic cooperation” as well as various geopolitical, international, and political issues, as stated by the Iranian ambassador.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced via Instagram that talks between Iran and Russia would continue next week in Moscow with the presence of both presidents.
He previously noted that Iranian-Russian cooperation has never been stronger, following the first visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Iran since the outbreak of the Middle Eastern conflict, which was sparked by Israeli-American strikes on Tehran in late February.
Earlier this month, President Putin assured his Iranian counterpart that Russia was ready to mediate between Iran and the United States concerning the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict.
Negotiations between Tehran and Washington have stalled, with increasing threats from the U.S. and Israel regarding military action against the Islamic Republic.
