Conference League Roundup: Getafe Humiliated at Home, Brighton Held in Czech Republic

The second round of the main phase in the Conference League unfolded on Thursday night with a total of 18 matches. Universitatea Craiova, the sole Romanian representative in the competition, triumphed away against Inter d’Escaldes, winning 3-1. The evening also featured several surprising outcomes, particularly involving Getafe and Brighton, two of Craiova’s current adversaries.

The biggest shock of the evening occurred in Spain, where Getafe, a team that Craiova faced in the opening round, suffered a heavy 2-5 defeat to Lugano.

Brighton, the Premier League side scheduled to face Universitatea Craiova next, also had a disappointing night. They were unable to secure a victory against Jablonec in the Czech Republic, settling for a scoreless draw at 0-0.

Another future opponent of Craiova, Egnatia, managed a 1-1 draw away at Aarhus, while Kairat Almaty faced a severe home loss, going down 1-5 against Panathinaikos.

In contrast, Universitatea Craiova lived up to its favorite status in Andorra. Coach Filipe Coelho’s team started strong against Inter d’Escaldes, with goals from Al-Hamlawi and Ștefan Baiaram in the first five minutes.

The hosts narrowed the gap in the second half, but Simon Elisor sealed the final score at 3-1.

Romania had other representatives involved in the evening’s matches. Cătălin Itu came on as a substitute in the 65th minute for CSKA Sofia, which ended in a 2-2 draw with Nordsjaelland. Vlad Dragomir played the full match for Pafos, which drew 1-1 with Riga.

Additionally, Romanian referee Radu Petrescu officiated the match between Steaua Roșie Belgrad and FC Copenhaga, which concluded with a 2-2 draw. The Danish team is among Craiova’s upcoming opponents.

Other notable results from the evening included Ajax’s 2-0 victory over Atalanta and Monaco’s 3-0 win against Freiburg.
