Trump Claims Zelensky Is Misguided in War Negotiations

Former President Donald Trump has expressed his discontent with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating that Zelensky does not understand the situation regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In response to press inquiries about Zelensky’s claims that Trump had chosen the wrong side in history, Trump reacted strongly. “Did Zelensky say that? Zelensky does not know what he is talking about,” Trump remarked, emphasizing that Zelensky should have resolved the war long ago. He added that if Zelensky had listened to him, a more favorable agreement could have been reached, potentially saving millions of lives.
Moreover, Trump suggested that it may be time for someone else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine. He further criticized Zelensky’s effectiveness, indicating that he believes the Ukrainian leader is not interested in ending the war.
As the conversation progressed, Trump referenced a “young woman” who has been critical of Zelensky and has spoken about Ukraine, claiming that there are attempts to silence her. While he did not disclose her identity, speculation has arisen online that he might be referring to former Ukrainian press secretary Yulia Mendel, against whom Zelensky had imposed sanctions for disseminating pro-Russian disinformation.
In terms of U.S.-Russia relations, Trump justified his call for easing sanctions on Russia by arguing it is necessary to stop the war in Ukraine. However, when pressed on how lifting sanctions would facilitate peace, he did not provide a clear answer, reiterating his belief that “Zelensky is not helping” and is seemingly opposed to a resolution.
- The relationship between Ukraine and the U.S. has been strained, particularly following Trump’s announcement on October 9 regarding a diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the restrictions placed on Starlink for Ukrainian military use. Zelensky has publicly criticized these decisions, while Trump claimed that dealing with Zelensky is more difficult than negotiating with Putin.
- According to Ukrainian media reports, the U.S. is demanding that Ukraine withdraw forces from Donbas without offering anything in return.
